Travelling This Summer? Check Your eVisa Before You Go
As the summer holiday season begins, UK visa and Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) holders should check their digital immigration status before travelling. Many avoidable travel issues arise because eVisas are missing, outdated, or linked to an old passport.
Before you travel, make sure your eVisa is set up correctly and linked to your current passport.
What is an eVisa?
An eVisa is the UK Home Office’s digital record of your immigration status. It is accessed online through your UKVI account, rather than through physical documents such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) or passport stamps.
If you already have an eVisa, you can check it through your UKVI account: https://view-immigration-status.service.gov.uk/status
Your login document may be a current or expired passport or BRP, even if you have already updated your travel document.
Why This Matters Before You Travel
Airlines and border officials now use digital checks to verify your right to enter the UK. If your eVisa is missing or linked to an expired travel document, you could face problems when returning to the UK.
This may lead to delays at check-in, denied boarding and additional scrutiny at the UK border. These problems can usually be avoided with a quick check before your trip.
Key Checks You Should Do Now
Before travelling, take a few minutes to check the following:
- Confirm You Have a UKVI Account: You should be able to log in and view your immigration status online.
- Check Your Passport Is Linked: Make sure your current, valid passport is linked to your eVisa. This is especially important if you have recently renewed your passport. You can check this under “Personal details” on the Update Your Details page: https://update-your-details.homeoffice.gov.uk/personal-details
- Update Your Details If Needed: If your passport has changed, or your personal details are incorrect, update your UKVI account as soon as possible.
- Keep a Share Code Handy: Consider generating a Share Code before travelling as evidence of your status. In your UKVI account, choose the option “To prove my immigration status for anything else”.
ILR Holders: Special Attention Required
If you hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which was granted via a stamp on your passport or decision letter, you may not yet have a digital eVisa.
You may require a No Time Limit (NTL) application to transfer your ILR to a modern, digital format. An NTL application verifies your ILR and sets up an eVisa so your status can be evidenced digitally.
Don’t Leave This Until the Last Minute
Many travellers only discover eVisa issues at the airport, when they can be difficult to fix quickly.
We recommend that you:
- Check your status as soon as possible.
- Resolve any issues promptly, including updating your UKVI account or making an NTL application if needed.
- Seek professional advice if you are unsure of your position.
